Emigrate to Australia : Australian Skilled Migration

The General Skilled Migration (GSM) Program is the only path for skilled workers to emigrate to Australia. Candidates must meet the Basic Requirements for GSM and pass the Australian immigration Points Test to qualify for a visa to move to Australia.

 

The types of Skilled Migration Programs
1. Skilled – Independent Visa (subclass 189)
Work and live in Australia with this permanent resident work visa. Certain foreign-national skilled workers, who hold occupations on Australia’s Skilled Occupations List, may be eligible for a Subclass 189 visa. This visa requires the applicant to complete a skills test and be sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government.
 
2. Skilled – Nominated Visa (subclass 190)
Work and live in Australia with this permanent resident work visa. Certain foreign-national skilled workers who hold occupations on Australia’s Skilled Occupations List may be eligible for a Subclass 190 visa. This visa requires the applicant to complete a skills test and be nominated by a state or territory government.
 
Application Procedure

  • Skilled Occupation Lists
    Check if your occupation is on the Skilled Occupation Lists. This visa is only available to people who can fill a position on this list.
  • Complete your Skills Assessment
    You must complete a Skills Assessment and obtain an acceptable score in order to be eligible for the Subclass 189 visa. Your score must be meet that specified on your letter of invitation..
  • Expression of Interest
    Next, you will need to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. The SkillSelect program will ask you a number of questions related to your background, skills, and relevant work history.
  • Obtain a government nomination
    The Skilled Independent Work Visa (subclass 189) requires you to be sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government. Once you find a suitable sponsor, they will send you a letter of invitation to apply for the visa.
  • Complete necessary paperwork
    Once you find a sponsor, you will need to have them nominate you for the visa. You can often apply for this visa at the same time your sponsor lodges their applications.Employers can complete the employer nomination application online through the DHA.
  • Apply for Visa subclass 189/190

Eligibility Criteria
  • Age: Below 50 years
  • Basic English skills
  • Meet the health requirements
  • Score at least 65 on the Points Test
  • Meet the character requirements
  • Do not have any outstanding debts to the Australian government
  • Willing to sign the Australian Values Statement
 
Skilled Regional Visa

The Skilled – Regional Visa (subclass 887) sponsored work visa category is for highly skilled individuals who also have education, skills and employability which will contribute to the economy in Australia, are willing to settle in States/Territories where their skills are in demand and can demonstrate that they have spent 2 years lawfully living in Australia already (generally on a Skilled – Nominated (Provisional) visa).

Nominees are selected by participating States/Territories in Australia to meet the skills shortages in those States/Territories. The current participating States/Territories are Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, the Northern Territory and Tasmania.

 

Requirements

This visa entitles you to permanent residence in Australia based on a combination of your skills, your work experience and sponsorship from the State/Territory that nominated you.

You need to satisfy the Basic Requirements:

Get a positive skills assessment from an Australian assessing authority for a nominated occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List;
Be nominated by a participating State/Territory for your occupation;
Have lived in Australia for 2 years on a Skilled – Nominated (Provisional) visa.
